Handicap Rule of the Week - February 5, 2009
February 05, 2009

If you want to play in any NCGA tournaments, USGA qualifiers or many other events, you need a handicap.  Now that you've joined this club, you've taken the first step towards that.

The second step is to post your scores.

Handicaps are based on the scores you post or are posted for you by a tournament committee.  EVERY time that you play a round of golf or even 9 holes you should post your score.  These will be used to create your handicap.

You can post your scores at the computer that can be found at every NCGA member course, at this website, or at http://www.ghin.com which is the USGA's main handicapping website.  In order to post a score at this site, you will need to know the course rating and slope for the tees from which you played.  These should be printed on the scorecard.

Once you have posted 5 rounds, you will have met the minimum to establish a handicap.  Handicaps are updated once at month on the first day of each month.  Therefore, if you have 5 or more rounds posted by February 28, your handicap will become valid on March 1.

So, get those scores posted so that you can play in the tournaments that are listed on our calendar.

There are a number of other rules regarding posting handicaps.  We'll cover them in another news item.
